1-2 teaspoons extract or flavoring (such as vanilla, peppermint, almond, etc.)
1 cup mix-ins (such as chocolate chips, fruit, nuts, etc.)
Pinch of salt
Optional: Food coloring to match the flavor
Preparations
In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the extract or flavoring and food coloring if using.
Pour the mixture into a large bowl and let it cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best results.
Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
About 5 minutes before the churning is complete, add the mix-ins.
Transfer the ice cream to an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours or until firm.
Scoop and serve, garnished with additional toppings if desired.
Tips
For a stronger flavor, add an extra teaspoon of extract or flavoring.
Mix-ins can include anything from chocolate chips and fruit to cookie dough and candy pieces.
